This Cancer season we are blessed with a Blue Moon, two full moons in a zodiacal month. The first Full Moon of Cancer season fell at the 1° of Capricorn on June 21st, and this second Capricorn Full Moon perfects on the anaretic (29°) of Capricorn, adding an energetic exclamation point to these potent lunation cycles. Symbolically, we have been on a heroine’s journey with the sea goat, as it makes its mythic quest up the mountain for mastery, perspective, and transfiguration. This Summer’s Blue Moon activation has illuminated what is worth the effort and what is not in alignment with who we are becoming.
Shapeshifting to liberation:
The myth of the sea-goat is one of shape-shifting and being between worlds. The constellation of Capricorn is connected with an early Babylonian myth of the god Ea, who ruled the flow of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, but eventually left the waters to share their wisdom with the Sumerian people. Astrologers connect Capricorn to both the god Pan, and Pan’s sister, the satyr Amalthea, who nursed an infant Zeus on Crete whilst in hiding from his father Saturn’s revenge. The god Pan’s myth is also concerned with escape and refuge; Pan lept into the Nile to escape the wrath of Typhon (the great snake) and morphed into a half-fish half-goat creature in the process.
Archetypally, the satyr Pan has been linked to Satan, another goat deity, and the two have become synonymous with pleasure, excess, and promiscuity. Capricorn rules the Devil of modern tarot decks, which teaches us to be conscious of the shackles that keep us from experiencing true freedom. The Devil is a card that comes with a wake-up call; are we being honest about the patterns that keep us in cycles of addiction, abuse, or disempowerment? Capricorn represents a transitional stage of consciousness, a turning away from the old ways, (or what I might call Patriarchal consciousness) towards a collective understanding of our interconnection represented in part by the next sign of the zodiac, Aquarius. This is a piece of Capricorn’s teaching, to show us where we must mature, and how we might shift into another relationship or mode of consciousness with ourselves, and the authority figures in our lives, in order to evolve.
