I am sitting on the floor of my kitchen. A place I find myself when the weight of everything seemingly forces me into submission. A sleepless night with a sick child. A stalled project. The dirty dishes, dirty floors, dirty hair. No space to breathe. Sitting on the floor of my kitchen I open my astrology app and look at the current astrological transits. “Fuck.”
We are told that astrology is a tool for navigating cycles and gaining collective perspective. I believe this to be true. I also believe that astrology can give us greater reason to fall to pieces, to be one with the mess, to swear like a sailor in inappropriate circumstances. How can we give ourselves permission to be both in the reverence of these cosmic archetypal energies while also having an authentic and embodied experience of them?
This week Mercury conjoined Pluto at 0 Aquarius. The psychopomp, way shower, eloquent pixie Hermes had a heart to heart with the Lord of the Underworld. Now, Mercury is disseminating Pluto’s secrets. The pair strategized about how to communicate the depths of our despair as well as our chaotic cravings for transformation. “Are they flexible enough to break through such rigidity? Are they truly shapeshifters?” How much bending can one take until they break?
On the 9th we have an Aquarius New Moon which puts our psychic elasticity to the test. The consciousness of Sun and Moon meet in the humanitarian sign of Aquarius to conspire on their revolutionary plans. Aquarius energies are being awakened within each of us, through the insistent needs of the collective.
The New Moon forms a square with Uranus, reminding us that the element of surprise can invoke genius. Disruption activates change, even when that disruption forces us to sacrifice on comfort. Perhaps our comfort is just what we are being asked to sacrifice at the altar of mass transformation. What you are noticing being challenged or deconstructed (within and around you) is a function of the urgent need for personal and collective evolution. It’s time to dream into what you hope is possible, especially in the face of so much turmoil, hubris, and rigidity. Find the places within you that are inflexible in the face of change, or disillusioned with our human potential, and challenge them to soften. Don’t let your grief turn into escapism. Let your grief open your heart to compassion.
Aquarius reminds us of the necessity of our ecosystems, the land, waters, and people that give us purpose, nourishment, and home. This New Moon is a call to fortify who you are by engaging consciously in community actions. Community may feel big and abstract, but it is actually a subtle and grounded network of belonging. The trees in your neighborhood are your community. The friendly face in the grocery store is your community. The song birds, your chosen family, the activists inspiring you to stay engaged, these are your community members. My community is also the crumbs on my kitchen floor, my son’s fingers, the sunlight reminding me to breathe in deeply and exhale out slowly. Aquarius energy connects the microcosm of our beings, our homes, our local communities, with the reality that all is interconnected.
Aquarius is a sign that inspires us to be authentic in our actions, no matter what the cost. If the astrology of the moment is causing you to melt into a puddle, there is likely something for you to learn from taking on a liquid state. If you too find yourself smooshed onto the kitchen floor, what are you noticing there? If the state of the world is making it impossible for you to function at your highest level, let’s acknowledge the suffering rather than compartmentalizing it away for the sake of convenience.
This is a New Moon spell, in which you might locate yourself authentically, lean on the wisdom of your community (no matter what, who, when or where it is), and allow yourself to be who you are at this revolutionary moment.
As a community spell, please feel free to share what intentions you are working with this New Moon, what seeds you are planting, and what burdens you are releasing into the comment space. We see you! We feel you.
Take good care ~
